PAD, ABDOMINAL (Nonsterile)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description in preference to Commercial Item Description A-A-30108.
This commercial item description describes nonsterile abdominal pads for use as postoperative dressing or for support of such dressings.
Salient characteristics. Abdominal pads shall be nontoxic and nonirritating and suitable for use as a postoperative drainage dressing to absorb wound drainage or to support such dressings. They shall be provided nonsterile. The pads shall be capable of withstanding steam sterilization procedures without affecting their size, shape, and ability to perform their intended function. Abdominal pads shall absorb a minimum of 14 times its own weight in water when tested in accordance with the U.S.P. method for Purified Cotton. All absorbent type abdominal pads are constructed to permit strike-through of body fluids. Nonabsorbent backing abdominal pads are constructed to contain body fluids and prevent strike-through of the fluids.
Type I - All absorbent. This absorbent abdominal pad shall be constructed of innermost layers of creped cellulose completely enclosed by a uniform thickness layer of absorbent fibers, and wrapped with Absorbent nonwoven fabric. The nonwoven fabric covering shall overlap at least 1/2 inch (1.27 cm) and shall be secured by a bland moisture resistant flexible adhesive to form a continuous bond along the entire length of the pad except for the cut ends. The minimum weight of the finished size A and Size B pad shall be 13 grams.
Type II -All absorbent. This abdominal pad shall be constructed of a uniform thickness layer of macerated cellulosic pulp (fluff) wrapped with cellulosic tissue. The pad shall be wrapped with an outer layer of nonwoven fabric which will be sealed around all four sides of the pad to contain the fluff. The fluff shall have an absorbency time of less than 15 seconds when tested in accordance with the method for Absorbent Cotton, U.S.P. The nonwoven fabric covering shall overlap at least 1/2 inch (1.27 cm) and shall be secured by a bland moisture resistant adhesive to form a continuous bond along the entire length of the pad. The minimum weight of the finished Size B pad shall be 13 grams.
