Stitch shall be type 301 in accordance with Federal Standard No. 751. The minimum number of stitches per inch shall be six.
The ends of a tape loop and a radiopaque tab insert shall be securely stitched between layers of gauze at one corner of the sponges. The tape loop shall be 3/8 inch minimum width, bleached white cotton herringbone twill or plain weave. As an alternate to white, the tape loops may be colored. Dyed tape loops shall have at least good colorfastness to laundering when tested in accordance with method 5610 of Federal Test Method Standard No. 191. Dyed loops shall not bleed when autoclave and shall be nontoxic. The tape loop shall extend at least 5-1/2 inches from the sponge.
The radiopaque tab shall be flexible, inert and nontoxic. The radiopaque tab shall be fabricated of a plastic material and shall be impregnated with an inert nontoxic substance which is opaque to x-rays. The radiopaque tab shall be capable of withstanding sterilization by live steam at a temperature of 250°F for one hour without bleeding or becoming tacky. For sizes 1,2, and 3 the radiopaque tab shall be a minimum of 1-1/4 inches long by a minimum of 5/16 inch wide. For size 4, the radiopaque tab shall be a minimum of 3-1/2 inches long by a minimum of 5/16 inch wide.
Laparotomy sponges shall be free of holes, cuts, tears, loose threads, ravelings, foreign matter and puckering.
Workmanship. The Laparotomy Sponges shall be free from defects which detract from their appearance or impair their serviceability.
Unit. Package (PG). One package containing 100 laparotomy sponges of one size only, as specified, constitutes one unit.
Quality Assurance Provisions.
Responsibility for inspection. Unless otherwise specified in the contract or purchase order, the contractor is responsible for the performance of all inspection requirements as specified herein. Except as otherwise specified in the contact or purchase order, the contractor may use his own or any facilities suitable for the performance of the inspection requirements specified herein, unless disapproved by the Government. The Government reserves the right to perform any of the inspections set forth in the specification where such inspections are deemed necessary to assure supplies and services conform to prescribed requirements.
