Laparotomy sponges shall be four plies of bleached gauze meeting all requirements of type III Absorbent Gauze, USP. Sponges shall be securely sewn along all four edges joining all four plies together. There shall be no exposed raw edges and no open pockets. Where edges are folded in to prevent raw edges, the edges shall be folded in approximately 1/2 inch. Edge stitches shall be a nominal 1/4 inch from the edges of the sponge. The sponges shall be divided into a number of rectangular sections, “U” sections or squares by means of suitable transverse seams, or transverse and longitudinal seams. Thread breaks and ends of seams and stitches shall be backstitched or backpacked not less than 1/2 inch. Thread breaks in lines of stitches are permitted when they cross a border line of stitches or when the end of the line of stitches meets a border line of stitches at an angle. There shall be not more than 2 such stitch line breaks per sponge. The finished sponge shall show no tendency to bunch or migrate.
