COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
SPONGE, SURGICAL, GAUZE (COMPRESSED)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this Commercial Item Description in preference to portions of Type I, portions of Classes A and B of Interim Federal Specification DDD-P-0054A (GSA-FSS).
Salient Characteristics:
Shall be nonsterile gauze sponges suitable for use in the treatment of injuries and in surgical procedures.
Sponges shall be of the following types, as specified:

Sponges shall be fabricated from gauze meeting all requirements of Absorbent Gauze, USP, Type VII, except the filling count mat be 8 to 11 threads/inch. The minimum page area of the piece of gauze from this the sponge is folded shall be as specified below. Sponges shall be folded in such a manner that the finished sponges shall not have any exposed raw edges or loose threads. Sponges shall be capable of being opened to the sizes specified below without exposing any raw edges or loose threads.

The contractor may, at his option, include a precount feature for each 10 or 20 sponges in each unit package. Any precount feature (if present) shall not deteriorate when autoclaved and any precount feature which is colored shall be colorfast when autoclaved. Sponges shall be free of cuts, holes, tears, foreign matter and ravelings.
