BALL, ABSORBENT, Cotton or Rayon
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description in preference to JJJ-B-BIE.
This commercial item description covers two different sizes of absorbent balls, suitable for use as an absorbent medical wipe or sponge.
Salient characteristics:
The absorbent ball shall be non-sterile, fabricated uniformly of either cotton or rayon fibers and shall be either spherical or barrel shaped. The finished ball shall be constructed to preclude separation of fibers during use in either the dry or saturated condition. Balls of a specified size shall be uniform.
Weight and diameter. The average weight and diameter of size 1 and size 2 absorbent balls shall be as follows:

Materials. The basic material shall be either cotton or rayon fibers, bleached and undyed.
Cotton shall meet the requirements of Purified Cotton, USP, except for absorbency, fiber length and sterility. Cotton shall retain not less than 20 times its weight of water and shall submerge in 10 seconds or less.
Rayon shall meet the requirements of Purified Cotton, USP, except for residue, fiber length, absorbency and acid-insoluble ash.
Workmanship. The absorbent balls shall be free from defects which detract from their appearance or impair their serviceability.
Unit. Package (PG). One package, containing four thousand balls of size 1 or two thousand balls of size 2, as specified, constitutes one unit.
Contractor certification. The contractor shall certify that the product offered meets the salient characteristics of this description and conforms to the producers’ own drawings, specifications, standards, and quality assurance practices. The Government reserves the right to require proof of such conformance prior to first delivery and thereafter as may be otherwise provided for under the provisions of the contract
Regulatory requirements:
Federal, Food, Drug and Cosmetics Act. If the product covered by this document has been determined by the U>S Food and Drug Administration to be under its jurisdiction, the offeror/contractor shall comply, and be responsible for compliance
