SPONGE, SURGICAL (STERILE)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description.
This commercial item description describes a surgical sponge, for general use in the dressings of wounds and for postoperative wound dressings.
Salient characteristics. Sponge, Surgical, White, absorbent, plain, all gauze, sterile, (package/product must be marked sterile, no strike through or bleeding of the labeling), sealed, peel-open design. Shall meet the requirements of USP Type VII, for Absorbent Gauze, except the filling thread count may be 8 to 11, Sponge shall be sterile when tested in accordance with USP. The sponge shall be folded and shall not have any exposed raw edges and shall be free of loose threads, ravelings and foreign matter. Package must be clean and without holes or tears.
The sponges shall be of the size and ply as listed below:

A - Two sponges shall be sealed in an envelope, 1500 envelopes (3000 sponges) constitutes one unit,
OR
B - Two sponges per envelope, 50 envelopes per package, 30 packages per case. |
Shall be capable of being opened to approximately 2” x 4” (5.06 cm x 10.2 cm) without exposing raw edges or loose threads. When envelopes are opened the sponges shall fall freely or the envelopes provide positive control for dispensing.
