The pad shall be wrapped with an outer layer of nonwoven fabric which shall be sealed around all four sides of the pad to contain the fluff. The fluff shall have an absorbency time, of less than 15 seconds when tested in accordance with the method for Absorbent Cotton, U.S.P. The nonwoven fabric covering shall overlap at least 1/2 inch (1.27 cm) and shall be secured by a bland moisture resistant adhesive to form a continuous bond along the entire length of the pad. The minimum finished weight of the Size A pad shall be 8 grams. The minimum finished weight of the Size B pad shall be 13 grams.
Type III -Nonabsorbent backing. This nonabsorbent backing abdominal pad shall be constructed of a layer of bleached absorbent fibers backed by a layer of nonabsorbent cotton, and covered with nonwoven fabric. A layer of absorbent creped cellulose between the absorbent and nonabsorbent layers is permitted. A single ply cellulose sheet between the outside nonwoven fabric and the nonabsorbent layer is permitted. The absorbent sections used in these abdominal pads shall not be less than 25% by weight bleached absorbent fibers. The nonwoven fabric covering shall overlap at the backing side at least 1/2 inch (1.27 cm) and shall be secured by a bland moisture resistant adhesive to form a continuous bond along the entire length of the pad except the cut ends. The nonabsorbent side of the abdominal pad shall be permanently and legibly identified by the use of a commercially acceptable color, either adhesive or thread, firmly attached to the outer nonwoven fabric. The color shall not bleed or run when steam sterilized. The minimum finished weight of the Size C pad shall be 17 grams.
Type IV -Nonabsorbent backing. This nonabsorbent backing abdominal pad shall be constructed of a layer of bleached macerated cellulosic pulp (fluff) wrapped with absorbent cellulosic tissue, a backing of nonabsorbent fluorochemical treated nonwoven fabric, and the pads shall be completely wrapped with the nonwoven fabric and sealed around all four sides to contain the fluff. The absorbent layer of fluff shall have an absorbency time of loss than 15 seconds when tested in accordance with the method for Absorbent Cotton, U.S.P. The nonwoven fabric covering shall overlap at the backing side by at lea pt 1/2 inch (1.27 cm) and shall be secured by a bland moisture resistant flexible adhesive to form a continuous bond along the entire length of the pad. The nonabsorbent side of the abdominal pad shall be permanently and legibly identified by use of a commercially acceptable color, either adhesive or thread, firmly attached to the outer nonwoven fabric.
