INTERIM COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
SPONGE, SURGICAL
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this interim commercial item description which was developed by the Veterans Administration Marketing Center, Marketing Division for Medical Supplies (904A), P.O. Box 76, Hines, Illinois, 60141, based upon currently available technical information.
This interim commercial item description covers a tamperproof sealed tray containing a sterile x-ray detectable surgical gauze sponge suitable for use in surgical procedures.
Salient characteristics. The sponge shall be in tamperproof sealed tray containing 10 sterile 4 x 8 inches, 12 ply, x-ray detectable surgical gauze sponges, suitable for use in surgical procedures. The sponge shall be 12 ply, USP Type VII absorbent gauze.
The sponge is to be designed so that it can be opened to 4 x 24 inches without exposing raw edges and shall not contain nor be prone to develop in use, loose threads or filaments. The sponge shall not fray or shred when wet.
The x-ray detectable insert shall be fabricated of plastic material and shall be impregnated with an inert, nontoxic substance which is opaque to x-rays. The radiopaque insert may be monofilament not less than 0.381 mm in thickness and equal to the length of gauze in the warp direction, and the length shall be a minimum of four times the width. The radiopaque or x-ray detectable insert shall be anchored between the layers of gauze in such a manner that it will not fall out when the sponge is unfolded and vigorously shaken.
The tray shall be moisture resistant and o sufficient rigidity to serve as a vessel for fluids and as the same immediate container for 10 sponges.
The sponges in the immediate container shall be precounted by the contractor. The sponges shall be handed or tied with a colorfast string into a precounted bundle.
The x-ray detectable insert shall not bleed nor show signs of deterioration, the precount band shall no sign of decomposition or parting at the seal, and the precount string shall show no sign of decomposition, no appreciable change from its original color and no staining of the cloth when they are subjected to saturated steam at a temperature of 250O for one hour.
