PAD, ABDOMINAL (Sterile)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description in preference to Commercial Item Description A-A-30108.
This commercial item description describes sterile abdominal pads for use as postoperative dressing or for support of such dressings.
Salient characteristics. Sterile abdominal pads shall be nontoxic and nonirritating and suitable for use as a postoperative drainage dressing to absorb wound drainage or to support such dressings. They shall be provided sterile. Each completed pad shall be folded parallel to either width or length direction and then sealed in a white sterilizable paper envelope prior to sterilization. Envelopes shall not be capable of resealing. Heat sealing or gluing shall be a continuous bond without skips. Ink used for labeling on the envelope must not bleed through to the product or be affected by the sterilization process. Envelope shall be designed to permit contents be aseptically removed or presented without contamination from nonsterile surfaces. Tabs shall be provided to facilitate opening. Abdominal pads shall absorb a minimum of 14 times its own weight in water when tested in accordance with the U.S.P. method for Purified Cotton. All absorbent type abdominal pads are constructed to permit strike-through of body fluids. Nonabsorbent backing abdominal pads are constructed to contain body fluids and prevent strike-through of the fluids.
Type I - A11 absorbent. This absorbent abdominal pad shall be constructed of innermost layers of creped cellulose completely enclosed by a uniform thickness layer of absorbent fibers, and wrapped with absorbent nonwoven fabric. The nonwoven fabric covering shall overlap at least 1/2 inch (1.27 cm) and shall be secured by a bland moisture resistant flexible adhesive to form a continuous bond along the entire length of the pad except for the cut ends. The minimum finished weight of the Size A pad shall be 8 grams. The minimum finished weight of the Size B pad shall be 13 grams.
