SPONGE, SURGICAL- STERILE AND NONSTERILE (KERLIX)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this Commercial Item Description.
This commercial item description describes a surgical sponge, which promotes healing and comport to the patient.
Salient characteristics: Sponge, Surgical, plain, prewashed gauge, absorbent, preformed to shape, folded 6 times from 9” X 16” (22.86 cm x 40.64 cm) precut 3 ply gauze (9” (22.86 cm) minus 1/4" (0.64 cm), plus 1/2" (1.27 cm) (stretched), 16” (40.64 cm) minus 1” (2.54 cm), plus 0” (stretched), folded diagonally to measure minimum 6” (15.24 cm) wide X 6-3/4” (17.15 cm) long plus or minus 3/4" (1.91 cm), white fibers to be crimped and stretchable vertically and horizontally.
TYPE I- NONSTERTILE
TYPE II- STERILE (Individual package must be marked/labeled sterile.)

Workmanship. The surgical sponge shall be free from defects which detract from its appearance or impair its serviceability.
Unit.
Package (PG) for Type I, unit package quantity A, 600’s constitutes one package.
Package (PG) for Type II, unit package quantity B, 40’s- 2 sponges per envelope, 20 envelopes per tray constitutes one package.
Package (PG) for Type II, unit package quantity C, 50’s- 5 sponges per envelope, 10 envelope per tray constitutes one package.
