COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
PACK, PETROLATUM GAUZE
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this Commercial Item Description.
Salient Characteristics:
Shall be a sterile petrolatum-impregnated gauze pack 1/2 ± 1/16 inch wide by 72 inches long (70 inches minimum) suitable for use as a surgical packing. The pack shall be folded to permit easy dispensing from its container. The pack shall be sterile when tested in accordance with the USP.
The gauze tape shall be first quality bleached cotton gauze, plain weave, having a minimum warp thread count of 28 yarns full width and a minimum of 25 filling yarns per inch. The gauze tape shall have woven selvage edges and a minimum tensile strength (full width) of 13 pounds in the length direction when tested in accordance with Method 5100 of Federal Test Method Standard No. 191. The gauze tape shall conform to the chemical and purity requirements of Absorbent Gauze, USP.
The petrolatum shall meet the requirements of White Petrolatum, USP, except the melting range shall be 125°F to 140°F (52° to 60°C) and the consistency range shall be between 150 to 240 as determined by a penetrometer.
The gauze shall be evenly and uniformly impregnated so that not less than 6.0 grams of white petrolatum remain in the pack after removal from the container when tested by the assay method for Petrolatum Gauze, USP. The finished pack shall be of one continuous piece free from loose threads and ravelings.
