COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
GAUZE, PETROLATUM
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this Commercial Item Description as a replacement for Federal Specification DDD-G-138B, which is cancelled.
Salient Characteristics:
Shall be sterile, petrolatum impregnated gauze dressings suitable for medical and surgical use. The dressings shall be sterile when tested in accordance with the USP.
The impregnated dressings shall be of the following sizes and shall contain the following minimum weight of petrolatum after removal of the dressings from their immediate container when determined in accordance with Petrolatum Gauze, USP.

Gauze shall be Absorbent Gauze, USP, Type I. Petrolatum shall be White Petrolatum, USP, except that the melting point shall be 125°F to 140°F (51° to 60°C), and the consistency shall be 150 to 240 as determined by a penetrometer. Petrolatum shall be evenly and uniformly distributed throughout the gauze. Impregnated gauze strips shall be accordion pleated in a stepped back approximately 1/8 inch each step to permit easy dispensing of the dressing. The dressings shall be substantially free of lint and ravelings and the edges of the gauze shall be substantially even.
