COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
DRESSING, BURN
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this Commercial Item Description.
Salient characteristics:
The sterile dressing shall be suitable for use in the treatment of burns involving large areas of the body. The dressing shall be white excluding backing and shall be sterile when tested with a biological indicator. Each pad shall appear neatly folded and be free of foreign debris, i.e., dirt grease, etc., and loose threads and lint shall be kept at a minimum. Each dressing shall have sufficient absorbency to retain approximately three liters of liquid. The dressing shall be 24 inches +/- 2 inches by 36 inches +/- 3 inches, and made of the following:
First alternate
(a) Facing – Absorbent Cotton Gauze, USP, Type I.
(b) Wadding – Absorbent Cellulose (30 plies).
(c) Backing - Color free polyethylene, approximately 3 mil in thickness.
(d) Thread – White cotton, Ticket A. Type ICI, 3 ply, Federal Specification V-T-276.
(e) Finishing - The gauze facing shall be wrapped around the wadding prior to stitching. The gauze ends shall be folded in, to eliminate raw edges. Stitching shall include the gauze facing, absorbent cellulose, and polyethylene backing and run along all edges. The polyethylene backing shall cover all folded in edges of the gauze. Stitches shall number 6 to 12 stitches per inch. The stitch line shall be located in from the edges at 1 (± 1/2) inch. The stitches shall be a lock stitch.
