COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
GAUZE, ABSORBENT (PACKING STRIPS)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this Commercial Item Description in preference to Type I Packing Strips of Federal Specification DDD-G-148D.
This Commercial Item Description covers a sterile Absorbent Gauze, suitable for use as packing strips and as drainage wicks in the treatment of draining wounds.
Salient Characteristics:
Shall be a sterile absorbent gauze, 5 yards in length, suitable for use as packing strips and as drainage wicks in the treatment of draining wounds. Shall be fabricated of bleached cotton gauze, having a thread count as specified in Table 1. Shall have a selvage edges, be free from loose threads and ravelings, and be of one continuous piece.
Shall comply with the following U.S.P. requirements of Absorbent Gauze:
Ignited Residue, Acid or Alkali, and Dextrin or Starch in water extract, (except the limits of the weight of the residue shall not exceed 0.50% and the limits of ignited residue shall not exceed 0.15%).
Residue on Ignition, (except the limits shall not exceed 0.50%.)
Fatty Matter
Alcohol Soluble Dyes
Absorbency, (except a 5 gram sample shall not exceed 30 seconds when tested before sterilization in accordance with U.S.P. test method for cotton).
